Why do people in developing countries disregard animal suffering.

We have seen in many communities around the world the lack of regard for street dogs is more a coping mechanism. People would want to help if they felt they could make a difference but there are so many animals horribly suffering, it is easier for them to numb themselves to the plight of the dog rather than help. This compassion fatigue and compassion suppression is not unlike what we see back in Canada at the dairy industry, or even climate change. The problem seems so big and so deeply heartbreaking, many people focus on themselves and their families. The human heart can simply not cope with the reality of the amount of suffering around us.
