Dog rescue in Spain.

Galgos (Spanish greyhounds) have been integral to hunting traditions for centuries in Spain. Despite their significance, they are often not regarded as companion animals, resulting in challenging lives marked by neglect and mistreatment. Their acclaimed speed and agility are harnessed for hunting, yet this has led to a cycle where only the puppies showing early potential are chosen, leaving others without homes or care. These selected young galgos face a brief period of utility and are then deemed too old by two or three years of age when they are sadly abandoned or subjected to inhumane treatment at the end of hunting season. Classified as agricultural animals, they lack the legal protections and care afforded to household pets in Spain.

Our partner organization in Spain is committed to changing this narrative. They rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome abandoned and mistreated galgos, providing them with a sanctuary where they receive medical care, rehabilitation therapies, socialization, and love. This effort extends to finding them forever homes around the globe, thanks to a network of dedicated volunteers who believe in giving these dogs a second chance at life.

Join us in supporting these magnificent animals on their journey to find loving homes where they can thrive.

Volunteer activities.

Volunteers at this centre help with all aspects of care for the dogs, which can number as many as 35 at one time. They begin early, ensuring the galgos’ area is clean and preparing and delivering their meals. Throughout the day, while maintaining the cleanliness of their bedding, volunteers engage in socializing the dogs. Specialized treatments like aqua-therapy and physiotherapy are conducted on-site, with most medical needs addressed at a local veterinary clinic. Educational efforts to raise awareness about the galgos’ plight are directed towards local schools and community groups, primarily during mid-day, allowing the galgos time to socialize in their open spaces.

Shifts are from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a 2-hour break for lunch and siesta. Volunteers have one day off per week.

Accommodation.

Your accommodation will be a private cabin within the centre’s grounds, situated on a quaint “finca” (farm) 20 minutes from the town. You’ll take care of your own meals and tidy your space. An initial visit to the local grocery store will help acquaint you with available products and help you stock up on necessities. The cabin features a private bathroom, kitchen, and patio, offering a comfortable and self-sufficient living space. The finca is securely fenced and hosts a family on-site, creating a semi-homestay environment where you enjoy privacy with a taste of communal living. AEI promotes homestays as they offer a valuable opportunity to immerse yourself in Spanish culture, save money, and enhance your stay in Spain.

The dire situation of the galgos is a pressing matter, with countless dogs requiring rescue. Every animal you assist significantly decreases fear and suffering. However, we acknowledge that this issue needs to be confronted on a broader scale. The aim is to reform Spain’s legal system, which currently does not recognize galgos as companion animals.

Due to present legislation, the welfare of galgos is deemed less significant than other dog breeds. Noteworthy progress is being made via an educational campaign and social media outreach. This centre acts as an agent for change, and you are invited to be a part of this mission as well. Our search is not limited to volunteers caring for the galgos at the centre; we’re seeking global advocates ready to aid these animals by passionately disseminating our message of love, care, and necessary legislative changes.

You will fall in love with these wonderful dogs. Known for their gentleness, laid-back nature, and endearing expressions, galgos make excellent companions and thrive in group environments. A cheerful assembly of galgos will always be there to welcome you at the gate upon your arrival. What’s more heartening than that? Despite their harrowing backgrounds, the center seldom encounters dangerous or aggressive galgo, with past volunteers consistently noting their gentle and affectionate demeanour.

Your accommodation is nestled in the foothills above the Mediterranean Sea, offering a private cabin for relaxation during your free time. With access to free wifi and a swimming pool for the warmer days, your comfort is assured. Additionally, the finca’s proximity to the sea and local cafes, shops, and entertainment venues ensure a fulfilling and serene volunteer experience amidst nature.
